The Role of Intestinal Microbiota in Promoting GALT Development

Periannan Sethupathi, M.D.

My research is focused on identification and characterization of intestinal bacteria that promote GALT development. I developed methods to surgically manipulate rabbits so that organized GALT do not have contact with the intestinal microflora. By introducing specific bacteria into GALT, we found that some but not all commensal microbiota promote development of B cell follicles in GALT. I am now developing an ex vivo culture system to expand these experiments; using this in vitro technique, we will identify microbial molecules that when introduced into sterile appendix explants, promote B cell proliferation and somatic diversification of Ig genes.

I also operate the Transgenic Core Facility for Stritch School of Medicine, performing microinjections to develop transgenic mice, and general surgical procedures on experimental animals.
