LOYOLA ELECTIVES
Students on the
clerkship at Loyola will participate on two core service rotations and
one elective rotation. Each student will spend two weeks on gyn-oncology,
as well as two weeks on obstetrics/labor and delivery. Each student will
participate on a two-week elective rotation through the sub-specialties,
including female pelvic medicine and reconstructive surgery, general and
office gynecology and maternal fetal medicine. Students will be assigned
according to preference, with a lottery to serve as a tiebreaker.
Female Pelvic Medicine & Reconstructive Surgery
The Division of
Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery is a unique,
multidisciplinary program that combines the expertise of urogynecologists
who treat all pelvic floor disorders in women from incontinence to
difficulties with bladder or bowel control and pelvic organ prolapse, with
urologists who treat the entire urinary tract, and specialty physical and
occupational therapists who specialize in pelvic floor rehabilitation. The
physicians and therapists work collaboratively with each other and with
their patients to tailor treatment plans that meet each woman’s preferences
and lifestyles. The division serves as a national model for treatment and
educational endeavors in female pelvic floor disorders. Patients can benefit
from the latest treatments and opportunities to participate in clinical
research trials for urinary incontinence, urinary difficulties, bowel
control problems and pelvic organ prolapse.
Maternal Fetal Medicine
The division
specializes in complete care of obstetrical patients with medical or
surgical complications during pregnancy. The group of physicians supervises
a busy antepartum service, providing critical care to obstetrical patients,
targeted perinatal sonography and antepartum testing and techniques to
manage complications of pregnancy. Physicians in the division work in
conjunction with neonatologists, geneticists and obstetrical
anesthesiologists to provide comprehensive care to mother and infant.
General
Gynecology
The division provides
care for women of all ages. It encompasses multiple arenas, from the
ambulatory setting, the emergency room, in patient care and the operating
room. The physicians perform procedures in the outpatient setting,
including LEEPs, colposcopy, sonohysterograms and endometrial ablations. In
patient procedures include hysterectomy, abdominal and vaginal, for benign
disease and operative laparoscopy. This group also provides 24 hour coverage
for acute patients through the Emergency department.
Gynecologic Oncology
Loyola is a
regional center in caring for women with all types of gynecologic cancer:
ovarian, cervical, endometrial, uterine, vaginal, fallopian tube and vulvar.
The
Cardinal Bernardin Cancer Center provides expanded clinics, diagnostic
capabilities and laboratories for the division. The group of physicians
performs diagnostic procedures, undertakes radical surgeries, using
minimally invasive techniques when appropriate, provides chemotherapy and
radiotherapy and humane terminal care. They work in conjunction with medical
oncologists, specialty radiologists and radiotherapists with a team approach
to the female oncology patient. The division also is active in the
multi-disciplinary Breast Care Clinic and performs breast aspiration and
biopsies.
