Instructions to Medical students

Academic Year 2021-2022

• You are required to learn the principles of Radiology throughout your medical school curriculum. 
• Students who have a special interest should take an elective rotation in Radiology. 
• The computer assisted instructional module is provided for self directed learning.
• The curricular objectives and method of implementation in each course/clerkship is outlined under course based curriculum.
• Radiology curricular objectives will be incorporated in each course/clerkship and the web module.

Objectives

MS1: Structure Course

1: Explain principle behind each imaging modality: plain x-rays, CT, MRI, Ultrasound, Brain scan, angiogram, mammography, nuclear medicine.

• How it is done
• Mechanism by which image is generated
• Indications and contraindications
• Cost

2: Describe how normal tissue is represented in each imaging modality: plain x-rays, CT, MRI, Ultrasound, Contrast angiograms

3: Identify normal anatomical structures in each imaging modality

MS2 : Neuroscience, Chest (PCM2) and Abdomen (MHD)

4: Recognize abnormal findings in imaging studies

5: Match pathological findings with image findings

6: List pathological conditions that can produce a given abnormal image finding

MS3: Clerkships

7: Select the appropriate initial imaging procedure for a given clinical situation.

8: Formulate a differential based on the pattern of observed abnormal image findings

9: Propose a final diagnosis based on the image findings and clinical setting.

• Recommended Text Book. Essentials of Radiology by Mettler
• Use of Internet resources are encouraged.
• Consultation with radiologist is encouraged in clinical years.
• Radiology lectures (5) in pre clinical courses.
• SGP sessions in PCM2.
• MS3 Intro Radiology session.
• Weekly radiology  Images project during MS3 clerkships.

Evaluation:

MS1: On line examination at the end of structure course. You will be evaluated on the 1-3 objectives. Passing grade 70% Pass/fail.

MS2: On line examination at the end of second year covering objectives 4, 5 and 6. Questions will cover Neuroscience, Abdomen, Heart and Lungs. Passing grade 70% Pass/Fail.

MS3: 

• Clerkship exams will contain questions evaluating the objective 7 and is part of the clerkship exam score.

• Participation in weekly radiology image cases to evaluate your ability to apply objectives 8 and 9. 70% participation required.

• On line examination at the end of third year under the Topics in Clinical Medicine covers objectives 1-9. Passing score 70%

Remediation:

Repeat any failed component.
