This is an alternate content page containing a Hot Spot Explore Activity. It has opened in a new window.
The activity has an image with defined hotspot areas. The hotspot areas in the image are labeled as:

Olfactory Tract - Olfactory Nerve (CNI) projects from the olfactory bulb through the cribiform plate (CNI is the smallest cranial nerve)
Optic Nerve (CNII), changes names to Optic Tract after the Optic Chiasm. Note that CNII is not actually a nerve, since it is an outgrowth of the diencephalon. It is a tract covered in dura, therefore intracranial pressure can be estimated via fundoscopy.
Oculomoter Nerve (CNIII), exits from the interpeduncular fossa and innervates contralateral Superior Rectus and ipsilateral Medial and Inferior Recti, as well as the Inferior Oblique. Also carries parasympathetic efferents.
Trochlear Nerve (CNIV), only cranial nerve to exit dorsally from the brainstem, decussates in the superior medullary velum and exits just inferior to the inferior colliculus to innervate the contralateral Superior Oblique.
Trigeminal Nerve (CNV), contains a sensory and a much smaller motor component. Exits laterally from mid-pons, and is easily recognizable as the largest cranial nerve.
Abducens Nerve (CNVI), exits from the pontomedullary junction and lies over the ventral pons. Innervates the ipsilateral Lateral Rectus.
Facial Nerve (CNVII), exits at the pontomedullary junction at the cerebellopontine angle. Provides motor to the muscles of facial expression derived from branchial arch 2. Carries parasympathetic efferents.
Vestibulocochlear Nerve (CNVIII), exits at the pontomedullary junction in the cerebellopontine angle. Located lateral to and slightly caudal to CNVII. Carries sensory information from the cochlea (hearing) and vestibular organs of the inner ear.
Glossopharyngeal Nerve (CNIX), most superior fiber exiting from the medulla in the post-olivary sulcus. Innervates a single muscle (stylopharyngeous, derived from branchial arch 3) and carries sensory information and parasympathetic efferents.
Vagus Nerve (CNX), fibers exiting from the medulla in the post-olivary sulcus. Provides motor to the pharynx and larynx (derived from branchial arches 4 and 6) and carries parasympathetics to the whole body down to the level of the hindgut. Carries visceral sensory afferents.
Hypoglossal Nerve (CNXII), exits from the medulla in the pre-olivary sulcus as a series of small nerve roots. Provides motor to the tongue.
