Walgreen’s Sports Medicine
Research Scholarship
SCHOLARSHIP ANNOUNCEMENT
The Walgreen’s family has made a kind donation to further
Loyola Sports Medicine education. The grant awarded will be up
to $2500 for the research of the awardee each year. This
monetary grant may be modified based on need of study at the
discretion of the Director of Sports Medicine.
PURPOSE
To fund student, resident, athletic trainer, or physical
therapist research in sports medicine. The research proposal
should be designed to promote further education and knowledge in
the field of sports medicine. The research proposal should be
high quality, and publishable in a peer-reviewed journal and/or
presented at a national conference.
DEADLINE: Research proposals must be received no later than
May 2,
2008. The Loyola Sports Medicine Faculty will review proposals
and the awardee will be notified May 23, 2008.
Proposals received after May 2nd deadline will not be
considered.
REQUIREMENTS
- The research proposal should be one
that is realistic, have the ability to be approved by IRB
(Institutional Review Board), and have the capability of
being complete within the one-year time frame. Studies may
occasionally take longer, and will be acceptable, but we
STRONGLY encourage a project to be completed prior to
the graduation of a student or resident.
- The awarded grant should be used only
for research purposes. In certain cases, it may be used for
funding travel/presentation at National conference. The
grant is not intended to be a STIPEND for the
awardee, but rather to fund the
activities/materials/recruitment of study patients, etc. of
the research study itself. Loyola Sports Medicine will not
fund any indirect expenses.
- The research proposal needs to have a
PI (principal investigator) who belongs to the Loyola Sports
Medicine Faculty (Douglas Evans, MD, Neeru Jayanthi, MD, and
Pietro Tonino, MD, Director of Loyola Sports Medicine).
Exceptions will be made on an individual basis. The
principal investigator must have met with student or
resident, and confirmed the integrity of the proposal.
- The research protocol should be
submitted in its entirety as if submitting for IRB
proposal. The funding will only be awarded, pending IRB
approval.
- Suggestions for research may include,
but are not limited to sports medicine research on
epidemiology of injuries or illnesses, prevention or
treatment of specific injuries or illness, retrospective
chart review, prospective studies, case-control studies,
surgical results, and any study that relates directly to the
advancement of knowledge of sports medicine.
- The awardee will be required to
provide a brief one-page summary mid-study progress summary
followed by a presentation of his/her findings locally at
Loyola in May 2007

OTHER IMPORTANT INFORMATION
A panel of experts made up of Loyola Sports Medicine Faculty
will evaluate all of the research proposals. All grant proposals
will be assessed on their:
- Scientific merit
- Applicability to, and impact on Sports
Medicine
These two criteria will be considered
equally in the evaluation process. Also factored into scoring
will be an assessment of how well the proposal addresses the
research needs identified by Loyola Sports Medicine. Each research
proposal will be ranked numerically and with specific written
comments. The research proposals with the highest score will be
awarded the grant and applicant will receive the scoring results and
comments given to their proposal.
It is essential that the results from the Loyola Sports
Medicine research be directly applicable to sports medicine, as this
makes up 50% of the research evaluation process. For example, a
project that is sound scientifically and produces results that will
have a direct impact on sports medicine will be scored higher than a
project that only scored highly in the area of scientific merit.
Proposals that are not awarded may be
resubmitted, however only two resubmissions are allowed.
