Comparison of Topical Anesthesia with Ethyl Chloride Spray against a Placebo Prior to Knee Injections

PI:      Neeru Jayanthi, MD
           Dan Weber - Co-Investigator

Duration: This project will undergo re-review on or before June 20, 2008

The purpose of this study is to determine whether a numbing agent sprayed onto the skin at the site of the injection reduces the pain associated with an injection into the knee

The numbing agent is a spray called ethyl chloride. Half the patients in this study will receive the ethyl chloride spray before the injection and the other half will receive a salt water spray.

Ethyl chloride is approved for the treatment of minor pain associated with injections.

Investigational or research drugs are not used in this study.

This research is sponsored by Loyola University Medical Center. About 46 patients will participate.
