This
study will try to determine how flexibility impacts performance and
injury rates in sprinters and in distance runners. It has been
previously believed that more flexibility is good for performance
and injury rates in all athletes. Recent research has attempted to
quantify the amount of flexibility that is good for athletes of
various sports. However, almost all of this research looks at
running economy using treadmills and VO2 max rather than
actual performance data. We also believe that although all the
athletes are runners, the way in which flexibility affects
performance and injury rates will be vastly different in sprinters
and compared to distance runners due to the demands on the
muscle. It is our hope to determine how differences in flexibility
affect performance levels in runners at each of the different
distances.
