Sports Medicine
Resident Rotation
Welcome to Loyola University Sports Medicine. Our goal is to
introduce the Family Medicine Resident to the exciting field of Sports
Medicine. The Sports Medicine Elective incorporates more
sports medicine lectures to complement prior didactic lectures. The
clinical rotation involves and is supervised by Sports Medicine
Faculty: Pietro Tonino, MD, Neeru Jayanthi, MD, and Melvyn
Harrington, MD. Each Resident will spend time with athletic
trainers and physical therapists, particularly in rehabilitation
aspects following sports and musculoskeletal injuries. The
Resident
will also receive continuing didactic lectures during the elective
either in conferences, or by faculty on joint examinations, and
other sports medicine specific topics.
Residents will have the opportunity to have
exposure to college athletics and elite athletes at universities,
high schools, and mass events that Loyola Sports Medicine supervise.
This will consists of a combination of Sports Injury clinic and
traditional Family Medicine, as well as collegiate and high school
training room clinics. Also, additional time will be spent at
various rehabilitation centers.
A general description with goals and expectations
for the medical student are as follows for four weeks:

- 4 – 5 clinic sessions weekly.
- Sports Medicine or Musculoskeletal clinics
with Dr. Neeru Jayanthi and/or Drs. Pietro Tonino and Melvyn
Harrington. Each ports medicine clinic will be 4 – 6 hours
weekly.
- One session with occupational physician
(Dr. Bryan Yanaga). Each session will be four hours weekly.
- One session with physical therapy weekly.

Total of 16 – 20 hours weekly of Sports Medicine contact
hours
- Will attend all didactic conferences and
selected sports medicine coverage.
- There are baseline expectations regarding
competencies and must have passing exam on post-test (minimum of
80%).
- Residents are expected to read weekly
sports medicine topics regarding basic joint examination.
- To be presented before the end of
rotation, a literature review of a sports medicine article in
peer-reviewed sports medicine journal (preferably American
Journal Sports Medicine) or a patient education handout on a
specific sports medicine condition.
- There may be expectations to work evenings
and weekends involving Sports Medicine coverage.
