The aim of radiation therapy is to deliver a precisely measured dose of irradiation
to a defined tumor volume with minimal distress to surrounding normal tissue,
resulting in eradication of the tumor, a higher quality of life, and prolongation
of survival. There are several irradiation modalities available for the effective
treatment of the disease: external beam radiation therapy, high dose rate
(HDR) and low dose rate (LDR) brachytherapy, total body irradiation (TBI),
unfractionated and fractionated stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS/T), and intensity-modulated
radiation therapy (IMRT). The Department of Radiation Oncology now offers
the full spectrum of these modalities utilizing the newest, most advanced
three-dimensional radiation therapy techniques.
