Ronald McDonald Children's Hospital
Pediatrics Department

Department of Pediatrics

The Pediatric Department includes approximately 90 full-time faculty members including academic generalists, pediatric medical and surgical sub-specialists and primary care physicians. The faculty provide a comprehensive array of general, tertiary, and subspecialty care for children. There are 125 pediatric beds, including 36 general inpatient beds, 14 pediatric intensive care beds, 50 neonatal intensive care beds and 25 newborn bassinets. There are more than 27,000 visits to the Outpatient Centers annually for general and subspecialty care. Furthermore, we have approximately 6,300 admissions per year: 3,000 to the Inpatient Ward, 1,400 to the Well-Baby Nursery, 450 to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, 750 to the PICU and 170 to the burn center. In addition, over 14,000 children were evaluated in the pediatric emergency department and 9,000 children received care on the Ronald McDonald Children’s Hospital Mobile Medical Unit.

Our patient population is large and varied, providing a broad clinical experience. Many of our patients come from nearby communities and are seen regularly in our Outpatient Department and in the Loyola Primary Care Centers for both general and specialty care; others are referred from the western suburbs of Chicago to Loyola for tertiary medical care. Thus, our department cares for a socio-economically heterogeneous population with a wide variety of medical and surgical problems.
