Chicago
is truly one of the world's greatest tourist destinations, with millions
visiting each year to enjoy our architecture, museums, unique neighborhoods
and city-sponsored festivals. Chicago is the cultural heart of the Midwest.
There are six major universities and more than 60 other institutions of
higher learning. Here you can enjoy the Chicago symphony Orchestra, the
Ravinia Summer Festival, and the Lyric Opera, as well as free concerts
in Grant Park on the shores of Lake Michigan. There are many theaters
with performances ranging from Broadway and pre-Broadway shows to original
productions. In addition to the downtown theaters, dinner and community
theaters can be found throughout the area.
In
Chicago, you can visit our famed Museum of Science and Industry, the Art
Institute, the Field Museum of Natural History, the Adler Planetarium,
the Shedd Aquarium, the Lincoln Park Zoo, and dozens of smaller museums
and galleries.
Chicagoans
make excellent use of the 29 miles of Lake Michigan shoreline that distinguishes
our city. Twenty-four miles of beaches are open to the public. In addition
to our Grant Park summer concerts, we have the nightly light and water
display at the majestic Buckingham Fountain. Whether it's a 10-K run,
a triathlon, or the annual Blues Fest, Chicago's lakefront is alive with
something for everyone.
Chicago
also boasts of nearly 600 parks, 13 forest preserve areas, 147 golf courses,
and 15 athletic parks and race tracks. The Cubs, White Sox, Bulls, Blackhawks,
and Bears provide major league sports enthusiasts with year round activity.
From
the annual Taste of Chicago in Grant Park to the many excellent restaurants
found throughout the city, dining on American, ethnic, or exotic cuisines
is a delight. Chicago's Magnificent Mile, Michigan Avenue, offers window-shoppers
and serious buyers access to the nation's finest stores. From the top
of the Hancock Center on a clear day, you have a view of three surrounding
states.
The
Chicagoland area provides easy access to many suburban attractions, from
the Six Flags Great America amusement park to the performing Lippizan
horses at Tempel Farms, to the Morton Arboretum, to the outstanding Brookfield
Zoo located only minutes from Loyola University Medical Center. Also in
Chicago's western suburbs is historic Oak Park and the landmark homes
of Frank Lloyd Wright.
