Research

Dr. Jay Perlman is Director of Research for the Department. A research committee is chaired by Dr. Perlman; other committee members include Evan Stubbs, PhD, Ping Bu, MD and Omer Iqbal, MD, PhD. Each resident has the responsibility to undertake one research project per year. These projects will be under the supervision of a faculty member. The source of these projects will be current ongoing projects of faculty members or de novo projects designed by the resident with a faculty member. The primary goal is acceptance as an ARVO abstract. A secondary goal is acceptance of a manuscript by a refereed journal.

Each resident is also expected to submit a research paper to the Chicago Ophthalmological Society Beem Fischer Award given to the three best research projects by a resident in any of the 5 training programs in Chicago.

Each resident must also present their research at the Annual Resident Alumni Day.

Each resident is to discuss the progress of his/her research with The Resident Research Committee on a rotating basis three times per year.  It is each resident’s responsibility to meet with their faculty advisor to discuss their research progress prior to these meetings. Residents are responsible for completing a research proposal form.

The following is an outline of the specific deadlines for the research responsibilities of the resident. Deadlines are strictly enforced and residents are encouraged to complete their work in a timely fashion.
