Rheumatology

The division offers longitudinal care and referral consultations for complex rheumatic illnesses, including:

  • Musculoskeletal pain
  • Arthritis
  • Systemic lupus erythematosus
  • Polymyositis
  • Scleroderma
  • Raynaud’s phenomenon
  • Vasculitis
  • Other related connective tissue diseases

State-of-the art diagnostic services are offered including:

  • Advanced immunoserology
  • Arthroscopy
  • Magnetic Resonance Imaging
  • Computed Tomography
  • Dual photon absorptiometry
  • Capillary microscopy

Through a multi-disciplinary approach, the division is able to provide patients with access to:

  • Therapeutic pheresis
  • Orthopaedic surgery
  • Hand surgery
  • Physical therapy
  • Biofeedback training and the Pain Clinic
  • Occupational therapy

Inpatient services are available seven days a week at the Loyola University Medical Center and the Edward Hines, Jr. VA Hospital. Outpatient services are also available at the Loyola Outpatient Center, Loyola Primary Care Center at Oakbrook Terrace, Loyola Primary Care Center at Darien and Edward Hines, Jr. VA Hospital.

Aphresis Unit
The Aphresis Unit evaluates patients who have a variety of immunologic and malignant diseases and provides aphresis therapy. In 2003, the unit performed 378 treatments. The Aphresis Unit together with the Lung Transplantation Team has the largest number of lung transplant patients who are being treated with photopheresis to suppress the development of bronchiolitis obliterans. The unit also is one of three centers in the region that provides LDL aphresis to patients with refractory hyperlidemia.

Education
Division faculty members educate medical students using a core curriculum and clinical rotations in either allergy or rheumatology. The rheumatology monthly rotations are supplemented by weekly clinical conferences and a monthly lecture series.

A competitive fellowship program is also offered and provides broad clinical training at the Loyola University Medical Center and Edward Hines, Jr. VA Hospital. The program is supplemented with rotations in orthopaedics and pediatric rheumatology. ABIM pass rates for graduates exceed 95 percent.

Faculty members actively help educate medical professionals in the community through Continuing Medical Education (CME) programs. Faculty are also frequently requested to speak at medical grand rounds at area hospitals on topics such as:

  • Rheumatologic emergencies
  • Paget’s disease
  • Osteoporosis
  • Managing osteoarthritis
  • Scleroderma pulmonary hypertension
  • Treating rheumatoid arthritis
  • Fibromyalgia
