The Division of General Internal Medicine and Geriatrics offers a comprehensive primary patient care system, specializing in the diagnosis and management of complex medical problems including multisystem diseases. Each year, the physicians provide inpatient care for more than 3,600 admitted patients and are available for more than 300 consultations. The division possesses special expertise in:

• Perioperative evaluation
• Geriatrics
• Medical disorders during pregnancy

To help increase patient satisfaction and decrease the length of hospital stays and cost per case, the division developed and implemented protocols to improve the quality and cost of patient care in areas such as chest pain, community acquired pneumonia and congestive heart failure.

Special Programs
The inpatient hospitalist program at Loyola was expanded in 2000 to help standardize care, decrease length of hospital stays and improve cost-effective utilization of resources.

The Palliative Care Medicine service manages care for patients who have an active, progressive and far advanced disease when the prognosis is limited, thereby focusing care on the patient’s quality of life. This programs focuses on symptom control, end-of-life decisions making, communication, psychosocial care and coordination of discharge planning and care.

The transition clinic was established to provide outpatient primary care to patients recently discharged from the hospital who do not have a primary care physician.
