Training in the Responsible Conduct of Research

Loyola University Chicago is a Jesuit Catholic University established to provide an academic environment grounded in high ethical values. This emphasis permeates our education and research, both formally and informally, at every level of these endeavors.

Loyola's emphasis on value-centered education and research resounds in the Loyola University Mission Statement: "We are Chicago's Jesuit Catholic University - a diverse community seeking God in all things, and working to expand knowledge in the service of humanity through learning, justice, and faith". This emphasis is also echoed by the Mission Statement of Loyola University Medical Center: "LUMC exists within a Jesuit tradition of academic distinction that embraces social responsibility and respect for diversity of thought, opinions, and people".

Animals used for experimentation are treated in accord with federal rules and regulations regarding ethical treatment, and fall within the policies of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee which oversees and approves all animal procedures. Likewise, any studies involving humans are governed by the Institutional Review Board for human studies which enforces all federal and state requirements.

The Graduate School at LUMC fosters the development of scientists through knowledge and competence gained in the classroom and laboratory. Creative research is performed against the backdrop of institutional emphasis on ethical behavior and moral judgment. Students in all programs are required to take a course in Bioethics, taught by the faculty of the Neiswanger Institute for Bioethics and Health Policy. This Institute offers multifaceted services to Graduate Students in encouraging awareness of ethical conduct in research. Seminars offered throughout each academic year by the Institute are regularly attended by graduate students and faculty.
