Visit Outline

When a teacher contacts our program, we usually work with him/her to schedule our visit and tailor our presentation to compliment recent health related class activities.  The following is an outline of a typical visit by Loyola medical students.

1.      Introduction (5 min)—We begin by explaining who we are, why we are visiting, and where we are at in our medical training.  For example, telling the children that we are in the 17th grade gives them a good reference point.

2.      Skit (10 min)

3.      Follow-up (5-10 min)—Through informal Q&A we review the names and functions of the instruments, discuss certain aspects of health maintenance, and field general questions regarding health and disease states.  It often helps to use this time to make direct references to what they have been covering in class prior to our visit (if applicable).

4.      Instruments (20-30 min)—The class is divided into a convenient number of groups and allowed to rotate from station to station.  At each station, a student reviews the name and function of an instrument and gives a few examples of instances in which a doctor many choose to use it.  After proper demonstration, the student helps the children use the instrument on each other.

Supplemental Activities—Additional stations can be added to enhance the experience.  For information, please click here.
