Interest: Alcohol-induced bone disease and osteoporosis
Research is centered on the effects of alcohol consumption on bone and
the development of osteoporosis. Specifically, our investigations examine the
effects of alcohol on bone microarchitecture, bone cell gene expression, bone
growth and turnover, and the role of aminobisphosphonates (BP) and parathyroid
hormone (PTH) as therapeutic agents. Current studies taking place in the laboratory
include: A comparative study of BP and PTH during alcohol consumption in adolescent
and adult male and female rats, and in ovariectomized osteoporotic rats; Evaluation
of the effects of alcohol on the induction of the osteogenic and adipogenic lineages
arising from human bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells; Micro computerized tomography
(uCT) of cancellous bone microarchitecture, peripheral quantitative computerized
tomography (pQCT) of bone mineral density, and vertebral biomechanical analysis
in binge alcohol-induced osteoporosis; Gene microarray expression analysis of
alcohol-induced bone disease.
